Fast Facts:
- The MK4 1.8 Turbo GLI featured the full GLI treatment, which included a full lower body kit, 18″ BBS “RC” wheels, Recaro seats with embroidery, sport suspension, red “GLI” badging, brushed aluminum interior trim, black headliner, chrome exhaust tip, red brake calipers, and special metallic paint colors (Tornado Red, Platinum Gray, Blue Lagoon, and Black Magic Pearl)
- The GLI in prior years was simply a 6spd VR6 with 17″ wheels. These cars did not come with the tasteful cosmetic treatment of the 2004.5 and 2005 GLI’s (which were 1.8T only)
- While the VR6 made 20 more horsepower, the 1.8T was lighter and quicker off the line. The torque advantage of the VR6 doesn’t reveal itself until freeway speeds, where it will eventually overtake the 1.8T
Key Model Year Changes:
- The 2004.5 is the first year of the 1.8T GLI (nicknamed the MK4.5 GLI)
- The VR6 was dropped entirely after 2004.5, leaving the 1.8T as the highest performing engine available on the Jetta
- 2005 was the last year of the MK4 GLI, which features no changes from the 2004.5 model. The MK5 Jetta is introduced the same year
