Fast Facts:
- The 6spd manual transmission was only available in the 2 door Regular Cab. The automatic transmission, appearing in 2005, could only be had in the 4 door Quad Cab. The 48RE 4spd auto came from the HD diesel line, and was paired with a transmission cooler and heavy-duty torque converter allowing for a towing capacity of 7500 lbs. In comparison, Dodge didn’t bother providing the short wheelbase, manual trans SRT-10 with a tow rating, as they didn’t encourage towing with it
- The extra size meant the automatic Quad Cab is slower to 60 MPH by .4 seconds (5.3). The 6spd 2 door SRT-10 reaches 60 MPH in 4.9 seconds
- This truck was created by the Dodge PVO (Performance Vehicle Operations) division, using Viper and Plymouth Prowler engineers. Surprisingly, this truck saw extensive wind tunnel testing when developing the aero, such as the front bumper and rear wing. The rear wing alone added 165 pounds of downforce at high speeds. However, engineers knew that it wouldn’t appeal to all buyers, so they made it easily removable for truck duty
- The hood scoop isn’t connected to an intake – it’s designed to pressurize the engine bay and push out hot air, keeping the engine temperature in check
- The forged wheels on this truck weigh 78lbs … each!
- The V10 engine literally came straight from the Viper. The only modifications were the ones necessary to make it fit inside the Ram (revised oil pan, motor mounts, exhaust manifolds, and different water outlet to fit the Ram’s cooling system)
- While the Tremec T56 is borrowed from the Viper as well, it is modified for SRT-10 duty. The upgrades include gears made of a harder steel and with a different helical cut to support the extra 2,000 lb weight of the Ram truck
- Bilstein shocks were standard, and a 5th additional shock is added on the rear axle to prevent wheel hop. Other suspension mods include a rear anti-roll bar, a 1″ ride height drop in front, a 2.5″ drop in the rear, stiffer springs, and a highly effective traction bar system
- The brakes and cooling system came from the RAM HD (brakes were modified for SRT duty). The bumper includes brake ducts for cooling
Key Model Year Changes:
- First year of the automatic transmission
- First year of the 4 door Quad Cab configuration. The Quad Cab featured a 34 gallon fuel tank (vs 26 gal in the 2 door SRT-10)
- The automatic features a two piece driveshaft instead of the 6spd’s single massive 4.5″ aluminum driveshaft
- The rear axle ratio is upgraded from 4.11 to 4.56 in both the automatic and manual models
- Front brakes are upgraded to new 4 piston calipers designed by TRW (previously 2 piston calipers). ’05 models also received a new 3 channel ABS system
- The following year (2006) simply offered new paint colors, like Mineral Grey. There were no mechanical or cosmetic changes
- The SRT-10 Ram was produced from 2004 to 2006
