Fast Facts:
  • GTO models equipped with the unique $3,200 Sport Appearance Package (SAP – shown here) came equipped with a more aggressive front fascia, lower valance, recessed grille insert, rocker extensions, a custom high spoiler, a rear fascia extension, and deep-sounding mufflers with dual chrome exhaust outlets. The kit could only be dealer-installed on Phantom Black, Torrid Red, or QuickSilver cars, although the kit was available in primer as a standalone accessory
  • Besides sporting the LS2 engine/drivetrain from the C6 Corvette, the 2005 and 2005 models are significantly improved over the 2004 models. The brakes are now 12.6″ compared to 2004’s 11.7″. The LS2 features DBW, replacing the throttle cable on LS1 cars. The new DBW system allows for an updated traction control system that is less sensitive and no longer intervenes with the annoying throttle “kick-back”
  • Pontiac also made changes to reduce wheel hop on 2005+ models, as this was a serious problem on the 2004 models (although many owners claim the issue still persists. The aftermarket offers many solutions). In addition, 2005-2006 cars have reinforced driveshafts, ring-and-pinions, and CV joints. The exhaust system now features a dual exit out the rear bumper (instead of single exit)
Key Model Year Changes:
  • Final year of the GTO
  • First and only year of the smoked tail lights
  • Steering wheel buttons are now illuminated
  • The door lock button is relocated to the center console
  • First and only year of the optional “Smoker’s Package” that added a second 12V power outlet
  • Power seats now operate at a higher speed
