Fast Facts:
- While the 1971 Mustang features a radical new design, it is still considered a first generation Mustang. This is because it shares the same unibody construction and suspension setup of the ’65-’70 Mustangs
- The massive engine bay was designed to fit a new series of big-block engines that were set to displace over 500 cubic inches. According to Mustang chief engineer Howard Freers, the 429 engine (sporting large canted-valve heads) “was a much wider engine than the 428, and that’s why the car got wider.” Unfortunately, the big engine plans were canceled due to the unforeseen oil crisis, and the sole 429 big block disappeared after just one year
- The large engine bay meant the fenders and hood were much longer than any Mustang before it. So long, in fact, that a Car and Driver road test claimed that “right turns, particularly those onto a section of road that falls away, are [made] virtually blind.”
- This was the final year you could buy a true high performance Mustang, as the high HP engines are dropped the following year. The Mustang doesn’t return to it’s performance pedigree until the 5.0 foxbody of the 80’s
Key Model Year Changes:
- First year of the entirely redesigned 1971-1973 Mustangs
- Final year of the big block 429 and Boss 351 offering
- The following year (1972) saw the “Mustang” lettering move above the right tail light (vs across the entire trunk panel). Ford also revised the “Decor Group” exterior trim package for ’72, added “Fasten Seat Belt” warning lamps to the dash, and upgraded the Grandé dual-accent paint stripe to a two-tone
