Fast Facts:
- Near 50/50 weight distribution. Aluminum hood, 14″ aluminum wheels, lightweight battery and more contribute to a <2200 lb weight. The rigid chassis structure was designed using Mazda's Dynamic Modal Analysis software, which allowed engineers to analyze stress at 8900 body points resulting in a "frame so strong, even a roof would not improve its rigidity" - Mazda
- The Bridgestone SF-325 tires are specially designed for the Miata. Predictability was a priority over maximum grip, which is why these tires have soft sidewalls and soft tread. The Potenza RE-71 (used on the RX-7 at the time) was considered, but engineers didn’t feel they fit the Miata, citing a sudden loss of grip when pushed to its limits
- Features Mazda’s rear wheel toe control to improve tire contact during hard cornering (it self-corrects its geometry during high lateral g loads)
- Utilizes Mazda’s Power Plant Frame (PPF) which locks the entire powertrain into one rigid unit. Essentially a large aluminum brace that mounts in-line with the driveshaft, connecting the transmission to the rear differential
- There are little “winglets” on the driver side wiper blade that help reduce wind noise in the cockpit
Key Model Year Changes:
- First year of the Special Edition model. Only 4000 made for the U.S. BRG paint only. Feature tan leather seats and tan tonneau cover while retaining a black top. Also includes a Nardi wood shift knob and wood handbrake grip, as well as special badging on the console
- First year of the automatic transmission option
- First year of ABS (as an option)
- The following year (1992) featured a new rear subframe brace, remote trunk release, and rear defroster and headliner added to hardtop
- 1994 was the first year of the larger 1.8L engine (replacing the 1.6L)
Seller Notes:
