Fast Facts:

  • The CJ-5, built from 1955 to 1983 (almost 30 years), is the longest running model of Jeep CJ. It was the “world’s most useful vehicle”, and there was simply no need to change it
  • The CJ-6 was available throughout the same time period (’55-’81). The CJ-6 was a CJ-5 with a 20″ longer wheelbase, allowing it to haul more passengers and carry more cargo
  • There were 2WD versions of the CJ-5 and CJ-6 available, known as the DJ-5 and DJ-6
  • The origin of the “Jeep” name is a bit unclear. Some same it came from the slurring of GP, which stood for Government Purposes (GP) or General Purposes (GP), and it eventually became coined
  • AMC bought Jeep in 1970. In 1972, AMC made it’s own 304ci (5.0 L) V8 available as an option on the CJ. While it only made 150hp, the CJ-5 weighed less than 2700 lbs, giving it nearly the same power to weight ratio as a 302 V8 Mustang of the same year
Key Model Year Changes:

  • Dealer installed radio became available
  • First year of the Quadra-Trac automatic full-time 4WD system
  • Minor frame modifications to compensate for the 304 V8’s power (introduced in the previous year)
  • First year of the Super Jeep, which had racing stripes and a chrome bumper
  • The previous year (1972) saw significant changes to the CJ-5., including stretched hood and fenders (giving it the “long nose” nickname), new engines (like AMC’s 304 V8), stretched wheelbase, new full floating Dana 30 front axle, new box frame, and more
  • The following year (1974) saw the “CJ-5” badge appear at the lower left section of the front panel. Also, the Renegade becomes a regular production option (RPO)
