1999 Ferrari 456 M for sale 1

Fast Facts:

  • The “456” name is due to each cylinder displacing 456 cubic centimeters. This was the last Ferrari to use this naming method until the 488 GTB
  • The Ferrari 456 (Type F116) was a 4 seater Ferrari featuring a V12 with and a manual gearbox (only the GTA’s received the auto trans). This 48-valve, dual-overhead-cam V12 weighs only 518 lbs and produces a wide, flat torque curve (the same torque produced at 1250 RPM is also available at 6000 RPM). Compared to other Ferrari models, the 456 has a relatively understressed engine (with a redline of “only” 7250 RPM), and has proven to be one of the most reliable engines Ferrari has ever built. This engine (F116C) is related to the V12 used in the 550 Maranello (which uses the F133 V12)
  • The “M” stands for Modificata, and is new for 1998. The 456M features a Pininfarina designed body made out of aluminum (except the carbon fiber hood). The aluminum body panels are welded to the steel structure using a filler called “feran” sandwiched between them. The “feran” filler allows aluminium and steel to be welded together
  • Pininfarina’s legendary sculpting makes the 456 look much smaller than it is – the car is a whole 18.7 inches longer than a Jeep Cherokee of the same period. It also features an unusually large 29-gallon fuel tank, and weighs nearly two tons despite the aluminum bodywork
  • The interior is stitched entirely out of Connolly leather
Key Model Year Changes:

  • The 1998 “M” was the last major makeover for the 456. It continued until 2003 with only subtle changes (nothing notable)
  • The Modificata of 1998 featured an enlarged front grille that has newly integrated fog lights. The undercarriage spoiler is now fixed, in place of the motorized setup that deployed at 65mph on the older models.
The hood is now entirely made of carbon fiber (a commercial application “first”), vs the old hood what was composite
  • Also featured a slightly redesigned interior with new seats, fewer gauges on dash, and a new Becker stereo head unit in front of the shifter ( as opposed to the old Sony unit that sat behind it)
  • The front control arms now feature anti-dive geometry, and the adjustable shock settings have been simplified to only 2 settings (vs 3): “normal” and “sport”. The front brakes are now larger and ditch the old hydra-boost setup for a new vacuum brake boost system
  • Other mechanical changes include a new Bosch Motronic M5.2 engine management (replacing the older M2.7). The cylinder firing order has also been changed for smoother operation

Seller Notes:

  • Gated 6 spd V12 Ferrari. Rare “M” model
  • One of only 688 produced in the world
  • Oil and belt changes done on 5/14/19
  • Service records dating back 15+years
  • Tool kit, owner’s manual and car cover included
