- The gorgeous Series II Jaguar XJ was built between 1973-1979. The top of the line XJ-12 featured Jaguar’s 5.3 V12 from the iconic E-Type. By this time, all XJ’s are available as long wheelbase (L) only
- Most carmakers didn’t use aluminum castings for their luxury cars as it was thought that aluminum blocks transmitted more noise than cast iron blocks. Jaguar, determined to establish the truth, created a cast iron version and aluminum version of the same block. Their testing found that there was no difference in noise levels between the two, and the aluminum casting was 100lbs lighter than the cast iron unit. The decision was made to machine the block, heads, and pistons from aluminum, resulting in a complete V12 engine weighing only 680 lbs
- In 1977, Jaguar decided the V12 models should feature their own unique transmission (instead of sharing the aging Borg Warner trans with the 6 cyl models). Rather than develop their own, they obtained a license from GM to use the strongest automatic transmission on the planet: the bullet proof Turbo-Hydramatic 400 (TH400)
- Combined with a lightweight V12 and a limited slip with 3.31 axle ratio, this was one of the fastest 4 door sedans on sale with a top speed of over 140 MPH
