- This W123 generation is regarded as the best generation of Mercedes Benz cars ever built. Many books have been written on these models, touting their no-expense spared build quality, reliability, and simplicity
- “Engineered like no other car in the world.” was the marketing tagline in for the W123
- There was over a year long waiting list for most models when the W123 began production. Millions spent in technical development and image rebranding had successfully paid off
- Even at the end of production in ’84/’85, there were still waiting lists for these cars. The only reason Mercedes stopped producing it was because they wanted to sell a newer, more profitable model instead (the W201/W124)
- The 240D was quite the fuel sipper – it averaged 28 mpg in mixed driving. This is one of many reasons the 240D become popular with cab drivers
- Speaking of which, a cab driver from Greece became famous for putting 2.85 million miles on his 240D. In fact, this appears to be the 2nd highest mileage ever put on a car, right behind the famous 3 million mile Volvo P1800. His accomplishment is a great testament to this car’s durability
- This car is grouped under the W123 “Second Series” (Aug 1979- Aug 1982)
- This series, compared to the “First Series” W123 featured a smaller redesigned steering wheel, contemporary interior buttons and toggle switches, a pneumatic headlight leveling system, redesigned seat belt buckles, a new seat fabric, and smaller headrests
- First year of ABS (as an option)
- In the autumn 1978 (“First Series”), the power output was increased from 64 hp to 71 hp on the 240D
- The Turbodiesel engine didn’t arrive in America until 1981
- The following series (W123 “Third Series”) began September 1982, and featured rectangular headlights, power steering, and optional driver airbag
- W123 production ended in 1986
