Fast Facts:
- This Turbodiesel engine (OM617.952) is part of the OM617 straight-5 engine family. These engines are notorious for achieving over 600k miles before needing a rebuild
- This Turbo engine was originally designed to meet the performance requirements of the Mercedes S Class. It wasn’t until later in the development phase that Mercedes decided to offer it in the Estate
- The Turbodiesel’s transformation over a standard diesel engine was substantial. The turbo system provided a 45% power increase, while increasing weight by only 5%. Fuel mileage and engine noise remained unchanged
- Mercedes went to the extreme when developing this engine, as they wanted to be certain about the future of Turbodiesels. The test engine made almost 200hp, and (with the appropriate gearing) could hit 60 MPH in 6.8 seconds in the test mule. A second test engine was able to comfortably make 230hp. Daimler-Benz now had faith in the future of Turbodiesel engines, and were ready to make it clear to the public that Turbodiesels were here to stay
- This was the only Estate wagon in the world with fully independent front and rear suspension, 4 wheel disc brakes, forged alloy wheels, and front and rear sway bars. The hydro-pneumatic self-leveling rear suspension automatically adjusts itself based on cargo load, to maintain ride height
- The Estate was incredibly nimble, thanks to a short 110″ wheelbase and a steering system that allowed only 3.2 turns lock to lock
- This W123 generation is regarded as the best generation of Mercedes Benz cars ever built. Many books have been written on these models, touting their no-expense spared build quality, reliability, and simplicity
