Fast Facts:
  • The Speedster (option M503) was only available in 1989 for this generation of 911, and included the “Turbo-Look” package. “Turbo-look” includes the widebody Turbo body panels, as well as the suspension, brakes, wheels, and tires from the Turbo. However, 171 Speedsters were reported to have been ordered without the wide body panels, retaining the slim body Carrera look
  • Speedsters feature a low-cut, heavily raked windshield that was made removable for racing purposes. There was also a double-bubble tonneau cover, fold-away fabric roof top, and no back seats (2 seater only, reducing weight). The fabric was an extremely light (single lining) material that was only designed for basic weather protection
  • The Speedster was so successful that they commonly sold for $40k over sticker price
  • Porsche’s design team was determined to create the perfect driving position in the 911. In order to cater to taller drivers, Porsche gave buyers an option to extend the steering wheel forward by 30mm (shifting it closer to a seat that’s set as far back as possible)
  • The 1987-1989 Carrera came with the updated Getrag G50 5spd gearbox, replacing the old ZF 915 5spd unit. The G50 offers many improvements (and some disadvantages) when compared to the 915 (detailed comparison here)
  • All 911 models share a dry sump oil system with the Turbo, designed to provide optimum lubrication regardless of cornering forces. Since oil capacity is no longer limited by a small wet-sump pan (which in turn is limited by things like ground clearance), the capacity of a remote dry sump tank can be as large as Porsche desires – in their case, 13.7 quarts. Such a large capacity has many benefits, one of which is cooler oil temperatures (since oil spends considerable time resting in a cool tank outside the hot engine). The other benefit is longer lasting oil and increased oil change intervals, as the oil spends less time within the engine’s harsh environment than in a wet-sump application. In fact, Porsche’s factory literature claims 15k mile oil change intervals (in ’89!), although very few Porsche owners wait that long to change their oil
  • Back in the 80’s, Car and Driver awarded this generation 911 the “Best Fit and Finish” of any car on the world market, concluding: “That the 911 outdistanced the likes of Rolls Royce, Mercedes Benz, BMW, and a host of Japanese brands should tell you everything you need to know about how well it is put together”. The panel gaps, interior fit, and paint quality of these cars are superb
  • Speaking of paint quality – Porsche’s extensive 26 step paint process allowed the company to offer a 10 year corrosion warranty on the their cars – longer than almost every other carmaker at the time. In fact, a 10 year warranty length meets or exceeds warranties offered on cars of today (many corrosion warranties are only 7 years)
