Fast Facts:
  • The Superamerica, which came out as the fastest convertible in the world (199 MPH), is much more than a 575M convertible. For one, the “Super” referred to increased performance over the 575M
  • The quad cam 48 valve 65 degree V12 (F133 G) is an all aluminum unit with a dry sump system. Higher flowing intake tracts, higher flowing intake manifold and heads, and a less restrictive exhaust gave the Superamerica a solid 25-30hp bump over the 575M. Handling and braking could be improved over the 575M as well with the optional GTC package, which provided 6 piston carbon ceramic brakes, stiffer springs, and a stiffer rear anti-roll bar
  • The most unique feature by far is the patented “Revocromico” (revolving and electrochromic) roof made up of carbon fiber construction and a windshield-like glass. It was unlike anything the world had ever seen on a production car
  • It was essentially an elegant, ingenious design of a retractable Targa glass roof. The revolving mechanism tilts the roof up towards the sky, letting it fall upside down behind the rear window. The simple revolving action means the transformation from coupe to Spyder occurs in just 10 seconds. Since the roof lays flush with the trunk lid, it takes up zero cargo space
  • Even more innovative was the electrochomic glass roof, which could vary its own tint electronically. Turning a knob on the console varies the electrical current running through the glass, which in turn varies the transparency. There are 5 levels of “darkness” to choose from, ranging from clear glass to a dark 1% UV tint
  • The heated rear window glass remains upright with the top down, acting as a wind deflector
  • Ferrari made sure there was minimal (if any) loss in stiffness over the Coupe model by making several modifications to the chassis structure. The beautiful rear side buttresses add structural reinforcement and act as a roll bar. The A pillars are beefed up, the firewall is strengthened, transaxle bracing is added, and more
  • The extensive use of lightweight parts meant the Superamerica weighed only 132 lbs more than the 575M Coupe, despite the electronic top and extra stiffening
  • Despite all the space reserved for a trunk and a revolving glass roof, the Superamerica still had room for an SUV-sized 28 gallon fuel tank
Key Model Year Changes:
  • One year only model, only 559 examples produced
  • Final year of the 575
  • The Superamerica was available with a gated 6spd, but these are rare to find today. Of the 559 examples produced, only 43 came with a 6spd manual
  • The 559 production number was the result of Enzo Ferrari’s “exclusivity” philosophy that there should always be one less car available than what the market demanded. Apparently, 560 people wanted to buy one
