  • The SVT Cobra, along with the SVT Lightning truck, were the first vehicles to emerge from Ford’s newly created SVT division
  • Considering the power rating is only 20hp more than the standard GT, the Cobra isn’t much faster in a straight line. What truly separates a Cobra from the standard GT is the higher RPM powerband, smooth ride, and better handling. Unlike the GT, the Cobra sacrifices low-RPM grunt for an emphasis on high RPM thrust. Peak torque occurs over 800 RPM higher in the Cobra than in the GT
  • The increased power was achieved using higher flowing cylinder heads (GT40) from Ford’s racing catalog, as well as an SVO intake, updated cam, smaller crank pulley, and recalibrated ECU. The shortblock is unchanged from the GT. Redline is now 5,800 RPM
  • The 235hp power rating is a bit misleading. SVT engineers had a goal of pushing the 5.0L V8 to 265hp, and apparently, they succeeded – however, Ford changed their horsepower rating system for 1993, and the result is that the Cobra’s rating was a mere 10hp more than last years GT (225hp). The GT also took a rating hit in 1993, now advertised @ 205hp
  • Cobra models actually ride nicer than the GT, as they’re equipped with a softer, more compliant suspension setup. The unique shocks and struts were built specifically for the Cobra by Tokico
  • The Borg Warner T-5 transmission is upgraded for Cobra duty. A higher torque capacity is granted thanks to the hardening of all five forward gears. The ratios were revised for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear. The Cobra-specific pressure plate provides increased clamping force to aid with high-RPM shifting and reduce slippage
  • Despite the high-RPM focus, Ford fit these cars with a counterintuitive 3.08:1 final drive. Swapping in a steeper final drive ratio will do wonders for this car
  • The 5.0L V8 received hyper-eutectic pistons in 1993. While these are cheaper than the forged pistons they replaced, the high silicone content found in hyper-eutectic pistons adds thermal stability and increases the piston’s resistance to knock
  • Ford offered a more extreme example of the Cobra to track enthusiasts, known as the Cobra “R”. These cars were stripped of the rear seat and lacked A/C, power windows, or a sound system to save weight. In addition, bigger brakes were fitted along with upgraded Koni shocks/struts, power steering oil cooler, and engine oil cooler (horsepower was unchanged). Only 107 examples were produced, and you had to possess an active racing license in order to purchase one
Key Model Year Changes:
  • This is the only year of the foxbody SVT Cobra, and the final year of the foxbody. Only 4,994 were produced
  • This is the first Mustang to come standard with 17in wheels. No cruise control or ABS was available. The only options were leather, a sunroof, and a premium sound system. The only colors were red, black, or teal
  • The following year (1994) switched to the SN95 platform, which retained the same 5.0 engine (albeit an upgraded top end for 5 more hp)
