- The Magnum V10 was basically a 360 Mopar V8 with two cylinders added on. It shared no resemblance to the Viper V10 other than bore size
- A major misconception is that the Viper’s engine was developed by Lamborghini using the Magnum V10 from Ram trucks. While that was the original plan … that’s not what actually happened (Chrysler owned Lamborghini during the time of the Viper’s development)
- The Viper’s V10 was actually built by Dodge – everything about its character and performance was dictated by Dodge. During the Viper’s development in the 80’s, the truck V10 engine didn’t even exist yet (a V10 Ram wasn’t available until 1994). The design objectives of the cast iron truck V10 engine were so different from the requirements of an aluminum Viper V10 that nothing could be shared
- Dodge knew from the beginning that the Viper needed to have an aluminum V10 engine. Unfortunately, Dodge had nothing of the sort other than a few drawings of a prototype cast iron truck V10. Strapped for time, Viper team reached out to Lamborghini, who has experience building high hp aluminum blocks (unlike Chrysler)
- Dodge sent over diagrams of their cast iron V10 block for Lamborghini to use as a basis for an aluminum V10 casting, and requested that Lamborghini design and build five complete V10 engines. Lamborghini agreed, and they went ahead and designed an aluminum casting. Unfortunately, this is where things took a turn
- Lamborghini was focused on engineering the V10 for high-RPM operation, with little concern for torque. Lamborghini’s fragile, high-RPM parts weren’t built to meet all of Chrysler Corporation’s engine life and durability requirements, which fueled many arguments with Dodge. Lamborghini wanted to use a sleeveless aluminum block for weight savings, while the Viper team insisted the aluminum block have iron sleeves for strength and longevity. Lamborghini wasn’t concerned about durability trials like Chrysler’s 300-hour engine dyno test @ WOT (!), but the Viper team was
- In the end, Viper team got fed up and either re-engineered or threw out nearly every Lambo-designed part to start from scratch – only the aluminum block casting was kept. The resulting 400hp V10 was the brainchild of the Viper team, so they deserve the credit!
Key Model Year Changes:
- New folding tow mirrors
- Tachometer, low-washer-fluid light, and under-hood lamp are standard across the line
- Front suspension and steering systems were updated to improve ride, directional stability and steering precision
- The rear suspensions on 2500 and 3500 models were modified for better ride quality under load
- Brake system receives new dual-piston front calipers and quick response vacuum booster
- Ram 2500 Club Cab is dropped
- SLT+ group with Quad Cab models got unique leather seats, steering wheel radio controls, ABS, trip computer, and heated seats
- For 2001 models, ABS was made standard, and child seat anchors were added to the rear cab panels. Diesels get a new 6spd manual option
