Fast Facts:
  • The 2002 Super Duty 7.3L 4×4 has a max conventional tow rating of 13,000lbs, the highest in its class at the time
  • This generation of Powerstroke (T444E), produced from 1994-2003, stemmed from a partnership between Ford and International Harvester (later named Navistar). It had some notorious faults, but many view the 7.3L as one of the greatest diesel engines ever made. Diesel Power Magazine ranked the 7.3L as one of the top 10 diesel engines of all time
  • The 7.3L was quite advanced for its day, featuring forged steel connecting rods, six head bolts per cylinder, and a new HEUI system (hydraulic electronic unit injection) which at the time provided the cleanest emissions ever in a diesel truck. The system relied on highly pressurized engine oil to make the engine run. While complex, this injection setup has proven to be one of the most reliable technologies ever used by Navistar and Ford
  • The six head bolt per cylinder arrangement allows the 7.3L to handle well over 40psi of boost before putting the head gasket at any risk of failure
  • The 6.0L and 6.4L Powerstroke found on later models (2004 – 2010) did not maintain the solid reputation of the 7.3L. While these motors could be bullet-proofed by the aftermarket, numerous failures erupted into countless lawsuits, and Ford had no choice but to terminate its contract with Navistar. From 2010 onward, Ford would produce its own turbodiesel engines in-house
Key Model Year Changes:
  • Power windows and door locks are now standard on the XLT (shown here)
  • XL trim and higher get new optional bucket seats, which offer additional space for storage. Bench seats are still standard
  • Manual trailer tow mirrors are now telescoping
  • New paint colors: Harvest Gold Metallic and Island Blue Metallic
  • New interior colors: Dark denim blue and medium dark parchment
  • Overall changes are minimal for the 2000 model year (MY)
  • The 6spd manual didn’t arrive until 2002
  • The 6.0 Powerstroke arrived in mid-2003
