Fast Facts:
  • The 8.1L engine (L18) replaced GM’s long-running 454ci V8 as the new heavy-duty gas engine alternative to the Duramax. It was essentially a stroked 454ci (4.00″ vs 4.37″). The increased stroke flattens the torque curve, providing over 400 lb-ft is available from 1,200 RPM to 4,000 RPM
  • At 496 cubic inches, it is the 2nd largest big block GM has ever offered in a production vehicle. The No.1 spot goes to the 500ci Cadillac engine from the 70s
  • The L18 was designed purely for hauling and towing, evident by its under square design (4.25″ bore and 4.37″ stroke). This engine was strong enough to power medium-duty Kodiak, marine, and motorhome vehicles of the period
  • Combustion chamber seal is high, featuring five cylinder head bolts for each cylinder (!) around the gasket ring area
  • With both the block and heads made of cast iron, the total engine weight is over 750 lbs. Towing capacity in Suburban application is 10,500 lbs
  • The cast-iron 8.1L was replaced with the oversquare 6.0L LS in 2007, which made nearly 70 ft lbs less torque. However, gas mileage increased substantially with the 6.0 (no longer single-digit MPG’s)
Key Model Year Changes:
  • Despite identical engine performance, horsepower and torque rating was reduced this year due to changes in the SAE rating system (SAE J1349). The 2004 rules now require things like the power steering pump to be installed before measuring engine output. Horsepower for the 8.1L is now rated at 320 instead of 340, and torque is now at 440 instead of 455
  • Other changes for the 8.1L include:
  • EGR is now removed, as emissions equipment updates allow the 8.1L to meet all requirements without EGR
  • Improved intake manifold and throttle body gaskets
  • Improved cam and crank sensors
  • Updated Onboard Refueling Vapor Recovery (ORVR) System (prevents fuel vapor from escaping into the atmosphere during refueling, reducing emissions)
  • The 8.1L was used on 2001-2006 Chevrolet/GMC trucks, although production continued until 2009 for use in motorhome and marine applications
