- The R32 is arguably more “Audi” than “VW”, as it shares the engine, transmission, rack and pinion steering, front suspension components, and rear suspension geometry with the 3.2L Audi TT. In fact, it essentially uses Audi’s Quattro AWD system – VW re-named it “4Motion” for the R32
- The R32’s 24 valve engine (EA390) was originally designed for the Phaeton and Touareg. It shares the same narrow 15 degree angle as the VR6 in the GTI, which means only one cylinder head is needed for both banks. The bottom end features a forged steel crankshaft with seven main bearings
- Overall, the R32 shares very little with the GTI mechanically. Even the rear suspension is substantially different, with the R32 using a multi-link setup with dual-link trailing arms instead of the GTI’s torsion beam suspension. The R32 isn’t eager to lift a rear wheel in a tight bend like the GTI – rather, it feels planted and composed. It also weighs 400 lbs more than the GTI and carries substantially more weight in the rear (all thanks to an IRS and AWD)
- The 3.2L makes an abundance of torque down low, and no turbo lag means it pulls hard in any gear. In fact, the R32 can go from 30 to 50 MPH in 8.4 seconds in 6th – much quicker than an Evo (11.7) or STi (10.9) which were market competitors in 2004
- The 4Motion/Quattro AWD system is manufactured by Haldex, who is the supplier of nearly all VW Auto Group AWD systems (even the Bugatti Veyron’s system). The R32’s system is front-wheel drive biased to the point that it sends 100% of power to the front wheels under normal driving. The front wheels have to lose traction before the rear wheels receive any torque (this system is more reactive than it is preventative)
- If the R32’s acceleration and handling numbers didn’t impress back in the day, the braking performance sure did. The massive 13.1″ rotors up front allow it to out-brake the same year Ferrari 360 Modena from 60 mph (needing just 108 feet)
Key Model Year Changes:
- First and only year of the MK4 R32 in the US. The R32 was never intended for the U.S market, but 2003 sales were so strong in Europe that VW brought it to America in 2004
- Every R32 sold in the U.S came loaded (sun roof, etc). Koenig leather sport seats were the only option ($950 – cloth was standard)
- Only ~5,000 were produced for American buyers
